Acupuncture for back and neck pain in Hanoi

Long flights, hours on a laptop in a café, heavy backpacks and hotel beds: back and neck pain is one of the most common reasons visitors and expats in Hanoi look for acupuncture. Dr Dang Hong, former head of the paediatrics department at Vietnam's National Hospital of Acupuncture, examines and treats every patient herself.

What a session looks like

  1. Short consultation – where it hurts, since when, medication, any injury. Bring scans if you have them.
  2. Electro-acupuncture – single-use sterile needles, connected to a gentle pulse for about 20 minutes.
  3. Acupressure massage and an infrared lamp on the painful area.
  4. Simple stretches you can do in your hotel room or at your desk.

Each treatment session takes about 30 minutes and costs US$9. The doctor will suggest how many sessions you need after the first visit.

Is it right for me?

Research suggests acupuncture can help some people with long-lasting low back pain and neck pain; results vary from person to person, and it works best alongside staying active. Tell the doctor if you take blood thinners, are pregnant or have a pacemaker.
